www.subaqua.co.ukreferencefirst aid kit

Posted to DIR_UK

I recently compiled a list of 'first aid' contents from scuba-uk. Several
medical doctors replied and added their 2-pennyworth. Some of the list is
obviously not suitable for a RIB, but it'll give you ideas....

Here's the list of first-aid stuff that everyone suggested.......

Essentials:

Hydrocortisone cream for bites, etc
Vinegar For bites where hydrocortisone doesn't work
Ibruprofan pain killers
Liquid skin for cuts (hurts like hell tho :-(
Immodium for upset stomachs
Stugeron / Kwells / Scopolomine For seasickness
Spare contact lenses For me :-)
Saline For contact lenses
Anti-histamine tablets
Analgesics As for analgesics (eg. Ibuprofen, Aspirin, etc.) these may not be
such a good idea. In work siutations, we are not allowed to issue
these (under HSE regs) since they can mask symptom,s which could be
important for diagnosis of problems. This is particularly important
with children or head injuries. In fact, it is agst reg.s to
actually have them in a work first aid kit. I teach sailing, and all
our kits are "analgesic free" thats not to say we are not allowed to
carry them and use them for those mornings after!!
(Dr Ross)
tampons they are great at soaking up blood and so are perfect for deep cuts. (Dr Ross)
clingfilm; excellent for burns, doesn't stick to the burn and allows the professionals to actually see the extent of the injury. (Dr Ross)

Plasters (various sizes)	Note some people are allergic to the
adhesive in Elastoplast
Gauze
Stcking tape
Bandages
Triangular bandages
Scissors
Medipreps Savlon and other "antiseptics" can make very good
bacterial culture mediums, ie they are not very good! Medipreps etc. are far better.

displosable gloves Gloves are an essential item, but how many
of us would remember to use them in a crisis. Sometimes its better to help the casualty deal
with their own cuts, that way the chance of Hep B and HIV transmission is minimsed.

Dioralyte for dehydration
Immodium
ear wash / dry To prevent ear infections (ie alcohol to dry out ears)
Waspeez For insect / critter bites
Massage oil !!!
Lip salve
Tissues (wet and dry)
Bandages
Sutures
Hypodermics (sterile)

Niceties:

AV pocket mask
Space blanket
Cotton ear buds
