the Cunard Liner was a on wartime-service as a Auxilary-cruiser, when she was
torpedoed on Jan.27 1918 2 miles NNE of Altacarry lighthouse, Rathlin Island,
Northern Ireland.
The wreckposition was first sonared by my old divepartner and friend Tommy Cecil
in 1987. The wreck itself was first dived in 1996. Wreck lies in approx. 112m to
the seabed and approx. 96m to the top. It sits upright with a slight list to the
starboard side. You can only dive the site when the ebb tide slacks, due to the
fact, that the wreck lies in the middle of a tidal-stream and is exposed to
strong tidal currents of approx. 6-7 knots.
If you are interested in the historical background of the sinking of the
Andania, you can contact me. I have researched this wreck and own a good
collection of information material. I also have the copies of the war-diary of
U-46 Commander Hillebrand, who was responsible for the sinking.
